Plastic consists of polymers, mostly made from fossil fuels, and various additional substances. Chemicals such as solidifiers, plasticizers or flame retardants are added during the process of plastic production in order to achieve desired material properties. Also, an unknown amount of chemical get attached to the polymers unintentionally during production or use. Thus, there are thousands of chemicals that consumers come into contact with on a daily basis. Many of them are harmful or toxic and eventually end up in our bodies and the environment, where they cause pollution and diseases.
