Global Plastics Treaty

This report seeks to identify options for measures and strengthen governmental accountability in addressing the climate impacts of plastics. It aims to maximize the climate benefits of the plastics instrument, clearly delineating responsibilities in conjunction with the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

As the world develops and adopts an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, health needs to remain a central part of the discussion. HCWH is calling for the Plastics Treaty to support and amplify measures to reduce the impact of unsafe and unsustainable medical products.

Microplastic pollution is set to become a runaway challenge if adequate preventive measures are not put in place quickly. Effective solutions that prioritise prevention must be implemented now to minimise its impacts on our ecosystems and climate.

A global plastic treaty needs to include an intersectional approach because persons subjected to multiple forms of discrimination or marginalization need to be supported with targeted measures and included in the solution.
